What is RULA?
RULA — the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment — is a postural analysis method developed by Lynn McAtamney and Nigel Corlett (1993) to evaluate exposure to risk factors associated with work-related upper limb disorders. It focuses on the neck, trunk and upper limbs, making it the go-to screening tool for seated workstations, assembly, packing and any task dominated by arm, wrist and neck posture.
RULA condenses a posture into a single grand score from 1 to 7 and an associated action level, giving ergonomics and safety professionals a quick, repeatable way to flag problem workstations and measure the impact of changes.
How RULA scoring works
The RULA worksheet is split into two groups and combined through three lookup tables:
- Group A (upper arm, lower arm, wrist, wrist twist): each is scored for posture, with adjustments for raised shoulders, abduction, reaching across the body and wrist deviation. Table A gives a posture score, then muscle use and force/load are added to produce Score C.
- Group B (neck, trunk, legs): scored for posture with adjustments for twisting and side-bending. Table B gives a posture score, then muscle use and force/load are added to produce Score D.
- Table C combines Score C and Score D into the final RULA grand score from 1 to 7.

When to use RULA vs REBA
RULA and REBA are complementary. Choose RULA when the risk is concentrated in the upper limbs and neck — assembly lines, packing stations, inspection, laboratory and computer/desk work. Choose REBA for whole-body, dynamic or heavy manual-handling tasks such as lifting and patient handling. When in doubt, run both: they share most inputs and together give a fuller picture of musculoskeletal risk.
Limitations of RULA
RULA is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It assesses a single snapshot posture, so for varied tasks you should evaluate the worst-case and most typical positions separately. It does not directly account for vibration, contact stress, temperature or full exposure duration, and judging joint angles by eye introduces some subjectivity. Use RULA to screen and prioritise, then follow up high-scoring workstations with a detailed ergonomic evaluation.
